The Caucasus is a tactical military unit within the Russian Ground Forces, most notably composed of the Kavkaz-Caucasus Brigade, and a separate Special Purpose Brigade for the Novorossiya operational concept. The Caucasus Brigade is the most prominent of the parent formations, and the only one based around a major city.
The Caucasus is the most prominent unit of the Russia Ground Forces, and is called the “key element” of the CFE Treaty. Its ten subordinate regiments and one brigade are based across the North Caucasus. The unit has a strong history of victories in the Chechen wars.

Lineage and honors
The Kavkaz-Caucasus Brigade has its heritage in the Separate Mountain Rifle Brigade, which was raised in 1916, and fought in World War I. On 20 June 1942, under the command of Red Army general Ivan Maslennikov, it was transferred to the newly formed 102nd Rifle Division. When Maslenikov was awarded the honorary title Hero of the Soviet Union on 15 September 1942, the unit became known as the 102nd Separate Mountain Rifle Division. It was awarded the Order of Lenin on 4 December 1942.
In October 1942, the division was transferred to the 46th Rifle Corps. In January 1944, the 102nd was awarded the name Kavkaz-Caucasus, and became part of the troops in the 15th Guards Rifle Corps. In February 1945, it became the 10th Guards Rifle Division of the 37th Army. In June, it was transferred to the 49th Rifle Corps of
