The homicidal pirate was inspired by Whitey Boyle, a criminal who spent 11 years in prison for the murder of his wife and two children. During his five-month long incarceration in New York, his life was narrated in a book which became a bestselling success. The brutal tale, known as Whitey: The True Story of a Boy on Death Row, by the Irish-American journalist Joseph Mitchell, was released in 1951. After his release, Boyle was promptly arrested and convicted for the brutal murder of his family. He spent the next 16 years of his life incarcerated in a state penitentiary.

The infamous Captain was the inspiration of several monsters. There was certainly no shortage of psychopaths in history whose criminality went on to be immortalized in children’s story. No other character was as dark and disturbing as Captain Hook was, and his story was the inspiration for “The Boy Who Cried Wolf”, which tells the story of a boy who was accused of lying about a wolf attack, causing other children to believe he was a liar. The murderer was then subjected to ridicule and abuse for years.
