in practice, flow experiences are rare because most activities involve the constant interruption of attention. it is the rare occasion when you are actually engaged in something, that you can move into the flow. it is not something you fall into or achieve. you must create these moments. learn to let go of the preconceptions you have of the user and their problems, and be open to new possibilities.
flow is a state of consciousness that occurs when people are performing an activity they are good at, and are engaged in it. there are three essential ingredients: distraction must be reduced, meaning that the person must pay attention to their task and not think about other things. his or her world must be kept simple, so that the person can concentrate on the task at hand. finally, there must be control of the environment, so that the person is not too overwhelmed or confused by the task. to learn to drive, you must first learn how to control the car by moving the steering wheel, then the gears, and finally driving the car. you must learn to control the inputs to the task by focusing on your driving at the very moment that you need to control it. if you do this, you can apply the skills you have learned, and eventually will achieve flow. when you achieve flow you are actually experiencing flow.
remember: to achieve flow, you have to engage in the activity from the beginning. the lesson that flow teaches is to be open to the unexpected, because the unexpected is the source of the joy of discovery. in flow, the individual experiences unity with the activity, and thus enjoys the intrinsic reward that is its own reward.
